1881 RH Baker Case Co Racine WI Letter to T Nichol President Garfield Mentor OH
This has to be a rare item ! It is an original letter to Thomas M Nichol in Mentor Ohio from Robert H Baker. The letter is date January 1, 1881. Mr Nichol was involved in the transition to the presidency for President James Garfield. This letter is from Robert H Baker, Secretary and Treasurer of the JI Case Threshing Machine Co. The contents are first to wish Mr. Nichol a happy New Year 1881 and for Mr Nichol to consider the offer of a position in Montreal, Quebec offered by the Case Co. He had previously spoken with General Garfield about this. Also, Baker would be happy to accept a position offered by the incoming President Garfield as a Government Director. He states that he would welcome the travel for his health and also would value the opportunity to make the acquaintance of certain important people. This letter was to be confidential of course. In the letter Baker concludes that he will be sending President elect General Garfield a bill for threshing machine that they are sending him. The cost on account is $400.00. Measures 8.5" x 11" fully open and contains envelope. Envelope torn open, slightly discolored. Letter has folds from being in envelope, otherwise in very good condition. Letter legible.
