JAMES MADISON & JAMES MONROE. The War of 1812-dated document is signed in print by, “James Madison,” as President and, “James Monroe,” as Secretary of State. The document was a special copy made for the Committee of Foreign Relations to review the instructions between President Madison and Secretary Monroe as it related to the peace negotiations between the United States and Great Britain. WAR OF 1812-DATED DOCUMENT SIGNED IN PRINT BY JAMES MADISON AS PRESIDENT AND JAMES MONROE AS SECRETARY OF STATE The document is titled, “Message from the President of the United States, Transmitting Copies of Instructions, Given to the Ministers of the United States, Appointed to Negotiate a Peace with Great Britain.” At the beginning President Madison gives a message, “To the senate and house of representative of the United States: I now transmit to congress copies of the instructions to the plenipotentiaries of the United States, charged with negotiating peace with Great Britain.” In 1814, President Madison encouraged the production of this document to ensure that Congress was fully briefed on Secretary Monroe’s negotiations with the British to ensure a peaceful conclusion to the war. MADISON & MONROE PEACE NEGOTIATIONS WITH GREAT BRITAIN The document was created in Washington County on October 14, 1814, consists of 47 pages of interesting content relating to the War of 1812, is in fine condition with a marble covers, and measures 8.25 by 5.0 inches.
