VA Judge John Scott Praises The Whig Party In 1834, Condemns Andrew Jackson
Judge JOHN SCOTT of Fairfax Courthouse, VA, May, 29th, 1834 to an unnamed recipient, expressing his distaste for then-President Andrew Jackson. When Jackson became president in 1829, he represented a significant shift in the U.S. Constitution’s presidential interpretation, causing a shift in American politics, frequently referred to as Jacksonian Democracy. The Whig Party was formed in opposition to Jackson. One page, 7 ¾ x 9 ½, Scott writes, “I regret that my public duties deny me the gratification of uniting with you in celebrating the triumph of the defenders of liberty in the late elections for our native state; and paying a just tribute of gratitude and respect to the able and faithful guardians of the Constitution in Congress. “I beg that you will say to my friends that it would afford me the highest pleasure to make one of their number on the occasion; and to your distinguished guests that as one of the People whose dearest interests are confined to their keeping, I am deeply penetrated with gratitude for the noble stand which they have made against the assaults of a too powerful Executive. The Whigs regarded Jackson as a despot who usurped power from Congress to serve his own populist ideals. They formed in 1834, the year the letter offered here was written, in response to Jackson’s refusal to fund the second National Bank. Henry Clay, known as the great compromiser, was the Whigs most influential and vocal early leader. Letter is in very good condition with folds and toning and some light soiling. A fine example of Whig support written in the year of its formation. Some stray pencil notes on the blank page from a previous collector.
