RARE Original Glass Negative of Theodore Roosevelt Endorsing NYC Mayor in 1917
THEODORE ROOSEVELT. Remarkable original glass negative of Theodore Roosevelt endorsing John Purroy Mitchel for reelection as Mayor of New York City in August 1917. Measures 7 by 5 inches and in fine condition with light chipping along the edges. A wonderful negative of Roosevelt taken in person directly from the camera. REMARKABLE ORIGINAL GLASS NEGATIVE OF THEODORE ROOSEVELT ENDORSING THE MAYOR OF NEW YORK CITY IN 1917 The following includes part of Roosevelt’s endorsement speech he gave when the negative was taken: “Major Mitchel has given New York City its best administration that it has had within my recollection; I am glad that he has consented again to be a candidate; I most earnestly hope that the Republicans will endorse the fusion ticket, and that there will be not contest against it in the Republican primaries. All good citizens, without regard to party, should welcome the chance to continue the present fusion administration in office; it has been honest, courageous and progressive.” A WONDERFUL NEGATIVE OF ROOSEVELT TAKEN IN PERSON DIRECTLY FROM THE CAMERA Although Mitchel, a reform Democrat running on the Fusion Party ticket, received an endorsement from Roosevelt, the former New York City Police Commissioner, Governor of New York, and President of the United States, he lost the 1917 election for NYC Mayor to the Democratic candidate and died eight months later in a military plane accident.
