Rare James Garfield Portrait Engraved Meridan B Silver Plate Footed Tray Handles
Rare Presidential Memorabilia James Garfield Portrait Engraved in a Meridian B 177 Silver Plated Footed Tray with Handles This piece is quite rare, only one other piece has been auctioned since 2005. In the previous auction it was speculated to be a campaign souvenir from the 1880's. To me, it appears to be a very limited production as a tribute to the assassinated President since the portrait is modelled after the 1881 painting in the National Portrait Gallery. The portrait and laurel leaves are surrounded by an ornate border of birds, flowers, and spiderwebs. The platter is is used. The field surrounding the portrait is lighted pitted and scratched. There are some slight distortions in the tray rim. The round platter is about 8 inches in diameter. Measures about 12 inches across the handles and stands about 1 1/2 inches tall.
