Note the placement of Washingtons right hand on the book...This is not the more common engraving by O. Pelton. From an Boston estate collection...Super collectable, in many museum collections, Alexander Hay Ritchie, Peter Frederick Rothermel, George Washington, 1852, engraving. There is one of these in the Smithsonian American Art Museum, among other notable museum collections. "Full-length mezzotint portrait of George Washington in a dignified pose, after a painting by Peter Frederick Rothermel. Washington, formally dressed, rests one hand on a dress sword, the point resting on the ground, which perhaps is emblematic of his role as military leader; the other hand rests on an upright book on a table. He stands in front of a great stone alcove, columns and an armchair with a United States shield at the top. Plate/Image Size: 26 3⁄8 x 19 5⁄8 in. Frame size: approx: 29" x 23" (Note: This portrait with the book and sword and amazing chair in the image is much more rare than the more common full lenghth portrait by Gilbert Stuart.)The artist employed mezzotint, a sophisticated tonal engraving technique, for a lifelike rendering of Washington’s face and the various richly textured fabrics and stone architectural elements shown in the image. The print is titled with a facsimile of Washington’s signature in the lower margin." It looks like it has never been out of the frame. Frame is included. Vintage condition as shown. It has some old moisture damage at the bottom as shown but the image is sharp and clear. It would look wondereful in your living room or in any washington collection. It is being priced accordingly as it is not in perfect condition but who is from 1852? :-) (The reflection on the glass in some photos is not in the engraving.) Peter Frederick Rothermel was a Philadelphia painter of portraits and history subjects. Born in rural Pennsylvania, he worked as a surveyor before moving to Philadelphia where he studied art at the Pennsylvania Academy. Alexander Hay Ritchie was an American engraver and portrait painter, best known for genre, portrait and figure subjects. He settled in New York City around 1847.
