He was the first Democrat elected to the presidency after the Civil War and the only president to serve non-consecutive terms. Cleveland was one of just two Democratic presidents, along with Woodrow Wilson, during a period when Republicans largely controlled the White House from 1869 to 1933. He won the popular vote in three elections—1884, 1888, and 1892.Cleveland was widely respected for his honesty, independence, and dedication to classical liberal principles. His efforts to combat political corruption and the spoils system earned him support from reform-minded Republicans known as "Mugwumps" in the 1884 election. After losing the 1888 election to Benjamin Harrison, Cleveland practiced law in New York City before reclaiming the presidency in 1892. After leaving office, he served as a trustee of Princeton University. Cleveland became seriously ill in 1907 and passed away in 1908.
