GEORGE WASHINGTON. Large piece of black cloth, measuring 2 by 1.25 inches, from a cloak personally owned and used by George Washington having been gifted to him by King Charles IV of Spain. Accompanied with original early 19th century handwritten provenance on an envelope where the cloth was stored: “Fragment of a Cloak presented to Genl. Washington by Charles IV, King of Spain.” Beautifully matted and framed under UV glass together with an original early 19th century steel engraving of Washington to an overall size of 14.5 by 12.25 inches. LARGE PIECE OF BLACK CLOTH FROM A CLOAK PERSONALLY OWNED AND USED BY GEORGE WASHINGTON HAVING BEEN GIFTED TO HIM BY KING CHARLES IV OF SPAIN King Charles III of Spain famously gifted Washington a donkey to congratulate him on achieving victory following the American Revolution. During his son’s reign from 1788 to 1808, King Charles IV likely gifted the cloak to Washington to celebrate his first inauguration as president. Washington relics accompanied with 19th century documentation are extremely rare and highly desirable with only a handful having sold at auction in the past 50 years typically for six to seven figures. ACCOMPANIED WITH ORIGINAL EARLY 19TH CENTURY HANDWRITTEN PROVENANCE: “FRAGMENT OF A CLOAK PRESENTED TO GENL. WASHINGTON BY CHARLES IV, KING OF SPAIN.” Two pieces of another Washington burgundy cloak recently sold each for $4,375 at University Archives in December 2018 and June 2022; however, neither of these fragments were as large, came with original or as early provenance, or gifted by royalty like the present piece.
