Original 1860s Print Abraham Lincoln/ Photo by Brady - Engraved by A.H. Ritchie
This is an original 1860s, steel engraved print of President Abraham Lincoln. It is about 9" by 5 1/2". The original photo was taken by famous Civil War photographer Matthew Brady. This print was engraved by also famous engraver Alexander Hay Ritchie, "expressly for this work." So he probably worked directly with Brady in this project. There is a very light water stain at top right. The back shows a ghost image of the front. This was often from the iron gall ink used at that time. This is the very picture used on the current $5 bill, but they cleaned up his wild hair some.
