During the 1856 campaign, former president Millard Fillmore and the Know-Nothings party adopted a more moderate platform that downplayed the partys opposition to immigration and advocated a rapprochement between the two sides of the slavery issue. The Republicans, led by candidate John Freemont, maintained avehementantislavery stance, a position that garnered them the votes of most northern states. Once again deciding to not run the sitting president for re-election, just as they did with John Tyler in 1844, the Whigs sought a popular war hero, General Winfield Scott in the 1852 election, for nomination instead of sitting president Millard Fillmore. Again, history repeated itself and the Whig party once again lost the election, splitting the party into the know-nothings and the republicans in the 1856 election.
