Groton, Connecticut: [Life Photo, August 12], [1940]. An original 10 inch high by 13 inch wide black & white photograph by Life photographer Thomas D. McAvoy. The image captures President Roosevelt, wearing his lucky white felt hat, seated next to Connecticut Governor Raymond Baldwin. Both are surrounded by reporters following a visit to the Electric Boat Company during the war. "Life Photo by Thomas D. McAvoy" is stamped in purple on the verso. The edges of the photograph are slightly rubbed with a few scratches to the edges and faint creases to the corners. Once mounted, there are glue stains to the verso. Good. General Dynamics Electric Boat Company was founded as the Electric Boat Company in 1899 and supplied 74 submarines and 398 PT Boats for the navy during the Second World War. The photojournalist, Thomas D. McAvoy (1905-1966) was one of the first photographers to use a Leica for news coverage. He is well known for chronicling the Presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt. Together with Margaret Bourke-White, Peter Stackpole and Alfred Eisenstaedt, he was one of the first photographers to work for Life Magazine.
