[James A. Garfield] Edwin Wallace Stoughton Autograph Letter Signed to James A. Garfield Pleading for the Bankrupt Ulysses S. Grant To Be Appointed Ambassador to England. Twelve pages on three bifolium leaves, 8.75" x 6.75". New York: October 22, 1880. It reads in part: My Dear General Garfield, Now that your election is affirmed, and thank God it is, I wish to say a few words about Genl. Grant who has done so much to achieve that great national respect. Some of his friends as you already know, aware of the inadequacy of his income to enable him to live as he should have, thought of getting for him some agreeable position, such as the presidency of a company with a handsome salary. One great place hitherto unoccupied by any representative of our nation has occurred to me which he might take, that of Ambassador to England. Genl. Grant would take precedence of all, except those of esteem. Genl. Grant is there held and of the fact that he has been Pres. of the U.S., no place lower than Ambassador will be purposely held by him. E.W. Stoughton. Stoughton was a lawyer and diplomat, and a close personal friend of Grant. He was on the commission that studied the controversial Hayes-Tilden election of 1876 in Louisiana, and as a reward for his service, President Hayes appointed Stoughton envoy extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary to Russia until he resigned in July 1879 due to health problems. He was a member of the Stalwart faction of the Republican Party that favored Ulysses S. Grant running for an unprecedented, non-consecutive third term in the 1880 presidential election. Following his two-and-a-half years-long world tour, in which the former president represented the United States in an unofficial diplomatic role, the Stalwarts saw Grant's renewed popularity as an opportunity to regain power. Grant was ultimately unable to get the 399 votes required to obtain the nomination after a bitterly contested Republican National Convention that lasted six days, the longest ever, and the nomination went to James A. Garfield. Stoughton dedicates the length of this letter to securing a post for Grant, whose finances would get increasingly dire over the next few years. A touching and remarkable effort in helping his friend and political associate. The former President was one of the pallbearers at Stoughton's funeral in January 1882. Condition: Flattened folds, slight toning, 1.5" split at the upper fold of the first leaf, and with some paper loss and splitting at the lower fold, slightly affecting the text.
