This is quite an unusual piece of American history. A block of wood from Cambridge MA George Washington Elm Tree. The Elm tree block with affixed inscription on brass metal plaque which reads "A Piece of the Elm Tree Formerly Standing in Cambridge, Massachusetts Under Which George Washington Took Command of the American Army. July 3, 1775. Presented by the City of Cambridge. 1924". Approximately 4-5/8" long by 2-3/8" wide by 2-5/8" high. Remnants of large knot in back of wood. After the tree rotted and fell over in 1923, it was cut into 1,000 blocks and distributed to state legislatures, fraternal organizations, and historical societies, with approximately 150 being sold commercially. While the story of Washington and the elm tree has never been verified, its influence remained a piece of local Massachusetts history and national interest even after the tree's destruction.
