An incredibly charming diminutive hand-painted figural place card, 3 3/4 x 4 1/4, belonging to George Washington’s great-great-great Grand-Niece Patty Willis Washington and hand inscribed by her along the border “Miss Patty Willis Washington.” The place card depicts a woman dressed in the fashion of George Washington’s era. It is obviously handmade as well as multi-media: the figure’s face, hair and petticoats are made of stock paper hand-painted with watercolor and whiting; her skirt is a silk damask fabric remnant; her headdress is made of lace and she carries an applique floral arrangement. The place card has an easel-style prop verso to keep it upright. PATTY WILLIS WASHINGTON (1880-1971) was the sixth-generation descendent of John Augustine Washington (1736-1787), George Washington’s youngest brother. The generations separating George Washington from Patty Willis Washington traced through the paternal lines can be seen below: 1. John Augustine Washington, brother of George Washington2. Corbin Washington (1765-1799)3. John Augustine Washington II (1789-1832)4. John Augustine Washington III (1821-1861); he was notable for being the aide-de-camp of Gen. Robert E. Lee, killed at the 1861 Battle of Cheat Mountain, the last private owner of Mount Vernon5. Lawrence Washington (1854-1920)6. Patty Willis Washington PATTY WILLIS WASHINGTON, along with her younger sister Anne Madison Washington (1882-1966) inherited many of the family’s George Washington relics.
