Collection of Bill Clinton Impeachment Newspapers, Plus Extras, 1998, Never Read
This collection of newspapers relating to the impeachment of President Bill Clinton are issues of The New York Daily News from 1998 and 1999. The three headlines, “Impeached”, “Prez Tops Pope”, and “Close, But No Cigar” all stem from pivotal moments in the Clinton impeachment. The first headline, “Impeached”, marks the day President Clinton was charged with impeachable offenses in the House of Representatives, much the same as our current President was on December 18th. The date of this newspaper is December 20, 1998. The complete newspaper is represented in aged, but unread condition. The second headline, “Prez Tops Pope” is from 12 days later, January 1, 1999, and refers to a poll in which President Clinton was named the most admired man in the world, topping The Pope. The poll was reflective of the sentiment many Americans had that the impeachment was a partisan hatchet job, and Clinton’s approval rating soared to 70% during the impeachment! I only saved the first 4 pages of this one, since it’s kind of a joke, but the format of the paper is wrap around, so you have the first 4 pages and the last 4. Again, unread, but aged (see pics). This paper is also notable because it marks the debut of the Euro, and there’s a smaller headline and 2nd page story about it. The third headline, “Close But No Cigar”, marks the acquittal in The Senate on February 13, 1999. The headline was a reference to the cigars President Clinton liked to smoke. This is a 16 page impeachment special, not a regular edition of The News, so, every article and picture is related to Clinton’s impeachment. The back pages of both actual impeachment newspapers, which are usually devoted to sports, are also devoted to the impeachment, with the final one showing the vote totals on each count. All of the newspapers are in aged, but unread condition. The “Impeached” newspaper, I would say, is in near mint condition, signs of aging excepted. The “Cigar” paper has a small frayed tear along the seam in one spot, maybe an inch long. “Prez Tops Pope” has 2 tiny, barely noticeable tears, of the type that often are seen on the outer edges of newspapers, around a half inch each, on the edge of the cover. The newspapers have never been read, their spines were never bent back, and they’re in pretty remarkable shape, for being 20 years old.
