Antique 1800 'Subscribers to BIRCH'S VIEWS OF PHILADELPHIA' Engraving -Jefferson
ORIGINAL 1800 'SUBSCRIBERS TO BIRCH'S VIEWS OF PHILADELPHIA' ENGRAVINGThis is a wonderful original. I have handled a few of Birch's views of Philadelphia in the past and they always do well. Some are more common than others and I think as the editions were broken up to sell as individual prints, often the extraneous pages were discarded. I imagine this kind of page was regularly discarded. In doing research, I was only able to find one other example of this page and that was in the Library Company of Philadelphia. Shockingly, no auction records and none of the larger galleries that sell the images have this listed as available or even having sold. It really is a very cool original piece as it lists "More than 150 people subscribed to the first edition of The City of Philadelphia and not surprisingly most were city residents. Merchants made up nearly half of the subscribers, while physicians, tradesmen, “gentlemen,” and government officials, among others, also purchased the views. William Barker, an engraver, Richard Folwell, a printer, and Jesse Oat, a coppersmith, who all worked with Birch on the views supported the project by purchasing subscriptions. Birch, however, failed to convince the Library Company to acquire one. (courtesy the Library company entray)". One of the people they leave out that is in the list is Vice President and future president Thomas Jefferson. His entry has a faint red underline on this engraving. I also notice important Cartographer and map maker Mathew Carey on the list. This is a wonderful original dating to 1800. Sheet measures 14 1/2 x 17 1/4 inches and is in excellent condition. Clean with just some consistent toning to the paper and some very mild and small spots. Verso shoes some minor restoration to the paper to repair some margin tears particularly the top and bottom margins. Hinged in archival matting. Really a remarkable find and one that obviously is not available regularly. I dont even find this one in Worldcat. Do your own research and see if you can find one.
