Has usual minor wear consistent with its age-A great vintage item ready for display! Comes with the typewritten text on a Lincoln template too-(See images below) Here is the speech in it's entirety: Influence of Monuments. The word monument is derived from the Latin verte moun which signifies to remind or admonish. From this a monument comes to mean any thing by which the memory of a person or event is perpetuated. An edifice, teller, or tombstone erected in honor of a person in high distinction, or in glory of a past event brings into remembrance such person or event, and assumes the character of monument. Ever since the foundation of the earth, man has caused such monuments to be erected, which, in their time, have bestowed a two-fold advantage, by not only celebrating his deeds, but also by exercising a beneficial influence over mankind in general. We read, ever in the earliest ages of the world's history, of monumental structures reared two men celebrated in their day. As generation succeeded generation and rude antiquity began to give place to a more enlightened age, the same custom was continued and great men were honored after their death with statues to commemorate their virtues and examples. Many sculptures, pyramids, mausoleums, etc., which have stood the shock of centuries, still remain, in ruins partly, it is true, but which nevertheless the visitor of the earliest esteemed contrive love to behold, and which, though of ancient architecture, still command his off by their grandeur and simplicity. Since the commencement of the Christian era and the dawn of a brighter civilization, permanent and abiding tributes have been paid to the memories of the heroes who have existed in every age and time. Momentous battles which have decided the fate of Empire, or the issues of great questions have not been allowed to pass unnoticed and unheeded; solid granite marks the scenes of their conflicts, which sculpture has lent her hand to engrave upon it in living characters the time mirth of these occurrences. Thus, it is evident, that man has lived, and now lives and expands, surrounded by monuments of past heroes and of past events. These, it must be admitted, exercise many and various moral influences upon the minds, thoughts and actions of individuals. As well might we say that history is entirely disregarded by nations in seeking their political counsel and economics, as that the proud columns commemorating the achievement of some lofty mind or the triumph of some progressive cause are powerless and operating upon human opinion and in steering the human heart. Monuments are living histories of eminent men written upon tablets of stone. And these the world is made to read with admiration or contempt the parts, that they played in life's drama, which distinguished them above their fellow men. It reads with praise upon the life, and veneration and it's hard, if it perceives their life reinforces successfully accomplished through on selfish motives and worthy endeavors and daily walk and conversation; through their entire devotion of mortal and physical energy to human advancement and improvement: but, with sorrow and aversion, if, perchance, it may recognize a selfish hero, – one, made distinguished by the force of his indictable will and ungovernable ambition. – Who sought only to elevate himself though it cost the degradation of others, who labored only to immortalize his own name, though, in affecting this, he placed obstacles in the way of humanities progress; and one who, when he had conquered the world, wept because there were no more worlds to conquer. Thus historic association give to monumental columns unwanted interest and influence. Books may perpetuate the memory of the battle, but the firm pillars of stone pointing heavenward can alone preserve the exactness of the battlefield or last resting place of the brave and patriotic dead. How many different influences are brought to bear upon the mind of the true American as he visits Bunker Hill Monument, erected on the very ground where was fought the first decisive battle in behalf of American Independence. How the sight and touch of this stir within him patriotic feelings which the mere reading of the history of the battle could never excite. He feels now, that he stands upon the same earth which found the breastwork's against the English assault and cannon. He looks, from the summit, out upon the prospect of unsurpassed loveliness, that is spread before him by land and sea, and contrasts this view with the picture of his imagination paints, of the country as it appeared at the time when the memorable battle was fought. He realizes that, this very change was affected by the patriotism and devotion to liberty of the firm and steadfast, over whose ashes the noble obelisk rises towards heaven, and crowns this magnificent scene. On this sacred spot, the brethren in the spirit of their principles and resolves that the liberty and country so dearly purchased with their best heart's blood shall never be basely compromised nor surrendered to treacherous men. It is no wonder, then, that Massachusetts is the home of statesmen, true and unwavering upon the side of freedom and human equal rights. It is not surprising that her citizens, living in the shadow of this monument, and daily remembrance of the heroic fortitude of their fathers, should be brave defenders of their nation in her hour of peril. Let then a monument be raised to signalise every victory of the right, and to celebrate the virtues of every truly great man. Particularly should we, of the present generation, honor, with abiding monuments, the patriotic dead who have, but recently sacrificed their lives upon the altar of their country in the late great struggle between freedom and slavery. But, above all, let the grandest monument be reared in memory of our late, noble, martyred president, a monument, which will tower and influence, as may it tower and height, among all succeeding generations as they read upon it the inscription, – Abraham Lincoln, a self-made man, the emancipator of the race, the preserver of his country, a glorious martyr to the cause of liberty, humanity and civilization.
