STUNNING B&W PANORAMA PHOTOGRAPH OF AN HONORARY DINNER FOR FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT IN NEW YORK CITY ON FEB 20, 1933, ON THE EVE OF HIS FIRST PRESIDENTIAL INAUGURATION. This inauguration took place Mar 4, 1933. There are many autographs in the large white border area beneath the image, including that of FDR and other dignitaries. I paid for PSA (Professional Sports Authentication) to authenticate the autographs, although I felt sure that the autographs were facsimile - due to the same black color ink for all signatures and the consistency of the ink when lines crossed. Still, I don't know what happens to live ink on photo paper after 90 years, plus I needed to be able to confidently understand what I had. PSA confirmed my suspicion - their finding stating that the signatures were facsimile is included with this listing. At the same time, I feel sure that the photograph itself, along with the facsimile signatures of course, was printed near the time the photograph was taken - I don't believe it to be a much later printing. This is because the photography studio who took the picture, Standard Flashlight Co., is shown not only within the photo but also with a red stamp behind the photo - see listing photo. This suggests to me that Standard Flashlight Co. not only took the original, but probably a number of additional ones with the facsimile signatures shortly thereafter. I can't find a history of this company online, but I can find a few other examples of their panoramic photos, and they are dated in the 1930s and 1940s. As noted, the photo was produced by the Standard Flashlight Company in New York. It was found in a storage tube rolled up, and the photos for this listing used coffee cups to hold down the edges. The photo is now being stored sandwiched in a thick plastic sleeve pressed against cardboard in a more straightened position - see last listing photo. It will also be shipped in this manner. The photo is 20" by 12" and is in VERY GOOD CONDITION. There are no creases in the photo. There is light edge and corner wear, with a small damage area top edge mostly behind the photo but also a bit on the front - see listing photo. There is a bit of soiling on the photo in the white spaces where the signatures are, mostly seen in left side of the photo area (seen faintly in the listing photos). In addition to a signature by President Elect Franklin Delano Roosevelt, others who signed the photograph and presumably were at the dinner include: Alfred E. Smith - an American politician who served four terms as the 42nd governor of New York and was the Democratic Party's presidential nominee in 1928. Edward R. Finch - a Republican member of the New York State Assembly (New York Co., 5th D.) in 1902, 1903 and 1904. In 1911 he helped found The New York Young Republican Club. Louis Seibold -a journalist who won the 1921 Pulitzer Prize for an interview with President Woodrow Wilson. Afterwards, it was learned that the interview was fabricated. Victor J. Dowling - a lawyer and politician from New York. He was a member of the New York State Assembly (New York Co., 16th D.) in 1894, a member of the New York State Senate (18th D.) from 1901 to 1904, sitting in the 124th, 125th, 126th and 127th New York State Legislature, a justice of the New York Supreme Court from 1905 to 1931, and sat on the Appellate Division from 1911 to 1931, and was Presiding Justice of the First Department from 1927 to 1931. Frederic R. Coudert - a member of the United States House of Representatives from New York from 1947 to 1959, and a member of the New York State Senate from 1939 to 1946. Those were the signatures I could make out. The only thing I could find on this event was a New York Times newspaper article dated Feb 21, 1933, the day after the event, which can be purchased and downloaded. A screenshot of the website where you can purchase this article is shown in the last listing photo. Franklin Delano Roosevelt was inaugurated for the first time just weeks after this photo, on Mar. 4, 1933. So this is a rare President-Elect photo of FDR, and if indeed if he signed the original of this photo near the time this photo was taken, it could be a rare FDR signature (albeit as a facsimile) when he was still President-Elect. WOULD LOOK GREAT FRAMED!! Folio
