1974 Boston Museum Fine Arts George Washington Glass Cup Plate, 1832 mold, boxed
(Read through for a special 4 for the price of 2 offer at the end!) This lead glass cup plate is art upon art and history upon history. Boston's Museum of Fine Arts (the MFA on the box) commissioned Pairpont Glass of Sagamore, MA to "re-create" these cup plates 50 years ago on a mold from 1832, the 100th anniversary of George Washington's birth, the history. Pairpont, using the original technique, built a matching steel mold into which it could pour molten glass, one at a time, using an antique press. Note the dozen elements in addition to Washington's profile and swirling curls: the leaves, the beams, the stars, the trident symbol, the footed rim, etc. Plus one necessary addition: an "MFA" at the base of George's head. A nice way to mix crafts and politics. The dimensions are 3-1/2" across the octagon (another fancy aspect to the plate). The flat surface in the middle is 2". The height is 1/2". It weighs a hefty 3.2 ozs. 4 for the price of 2! Here's the special offer. If you buy two, both in excellent shape (not so much the boxes), I will give you two more also with boxes, for free. You'll only pay for shipping for the two, not for four. The second pair have such minor scratches that I would guiltlessly give them as gifts. This offer is only if you buy two, period. That's it.
