This beautiful -- and very old -- steel engraving is from American Scenery, arguably the finest collection of pre-Civil War views of America. It was published in 1840 ( NOT a repro, actually printed that year). The artist was W. H. Bartlett (1809-1854), the English landscape painter who traveled widely in his short life, producing images of landmarks, city views and natural wonders for a number of travel books published in London. American Scenery was the most popular of these, and remains a charming historic picture of many parts of our country in the 1830s. H. Wallis was the engraver. The full title of the source is American Scenery; or, Land, Lake, and River/Illustrations of Transatlantic Nature by N. P. Willis (London: George Virtue, 1840). VERY GOOD condition. [ A steel engraving is an image printed on paper from an inked steel plate which has been engraved with a portrait, view, or other art work.] Mat opening about 6 x 7.75 inches.
