RARE Al Volkland Signed Original Dallas Texas Accident Photo JFK Assassination
This is for an INCREDIBLY RARE ORIGINAL Type 1 (developed from the camera original negative in July of 1961) black & white photo, approximately 8" x 10" in size, signed and dated by former Dallas Times Herald staff photographer Al Volkland, now deceased. Albert Jordan Volkland (November 10, 1915 - November 28, 2007) On November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated as his motorcade made its way through the streets of downtown Dallas, Texas, by Lee Harvey Oswald, from a sixth floor window of the Texas School Book Depository building on the corner of Elm and Houston Streets. Al Volkland, a staff photographer for the Dallas Times Herald at the time, was standing on the Stemmons Freeway in Dallas, just a short distance from Dealey Plaza. Immediately following the shooting, as President Kennedy's limousine sped out of Dealey Plaza and made its way onto Stemmons Freeway, Volkland captured one of the most well known and iconic photos taken that day. It shows the presidential limousine speeding down Stemmons Freeway, en route to Parkland Hospital, with Secret Service agent Clint Hill spread over top of the car. The Secret Service follow up car can also be seen in his photo, following close behind. Volkland also became an eyewitness to the whereabouts of Dallas Police Officer J.D. Tippit during the last minutes of his life. Tippit was also shot and killed that day by Lee Harvey Oswald. Volkland, shortly after snapping his famous photo, spotted Tippit at a gas station in Oak Cliff. Volkland knew Tippit personally and waved to him when he saw him at the gas station. Tippit was killed only a few minutes afterwards. Volkland had a photography service business in Dallas at the time as well, and was hired quite often by the Dallas Police Department to photograph traffic accidents for use in their official reports. Volkland would make 2 copies of each photo, one for the Dallas Police Department file and one for his own personal file. This is one of his photos taken during that time and is his personal file copy of the photo. The photo depicts a traffic accident in Dallas, Texas.
