Johnson to sign the ‘Joint Resolution to Authorize the United States Secret Service to Furnish Protection to Major Presidential or Vice Presidential Candidates’ (H.J. Res. 1292) on June 6, 1968, the very day Senator Robert F. Kennedy was assassinated. HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT PEN USED BY PRESIDENT LYNDON B. JOHNSON TO SIGN THE ‘JOINT RESOLUTION TO AUTHORIZE THE UNITED STATES SECRET SERVICE TO FURNISH PROTECTION TO MAJOR PRESIDENTIAL OR VICE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES’ ON JUNE 6, 1968, THE VERY DAY SENATOR ROBERT F. KENNEDY WAS ASSASSINATED Official ‘bill signer’ Eversharp pen measures 5.25 inches in length, features a navy-blue plastic barrel bearing a gold facsimile signature with a presidential seal, and a silver-tone cap section. Accompanied with a typed caption affirming that the pen was, “used by the President on June 6, 1968, in signing H.J. Res. 1292,” and the original presentation box with a presidential seal and facsimile signature. In fine condition with dampstaining, staining, and soiling to the box and beautifully framed with a cloth backing to an overall size of 10.75 by 10.5 inches. ACCOMPANIED WITH A TYPED CATION AFFIRMING THE AUTHENTICITY OF THE PEN, AN INCREDIBLE ARTIFACT PERTAINING TO THE ASSASSINATION OF ROBERT KENNEDY Shortly after winning the California Democratic Party presidential primary, Robert F. Kennedy was shot by assassin Sirhan Sirhan at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles on June 5, 1968. He died the following day at Good Samaritan Hospital on June 6. This significant joint resolution passed by President Lyndon B. Johnson and the 90th U.S. Congress applied the standard for presidential and vice presidential candidates to receive Secret Service protection. An incredible artifact pertaining to the assassination of Robert Kennedy.
