1910 Stereo Card ex-Prez Roosevelt Making Speech in NYC After Return from Africa

Following the Inauguration of his chosen successor, William H. Taft, on March 4th, 1909, Theodore Roosevelt just wanted to bug out of town. He had arranged, with the Smithsonian Insitute, for an extended trip into Africa to collect specimens for them. (As well as himself, since he loved to hunt). Plus, because he was such a prolific writer, TR had arranged to get paid to have his exploits on the Dark Continent published at the amazing rate of a dollar a word! As if he actually needed the money. Those exploits and tales became popularized on scores of postcards (many we have in our eBay store) and even in graphic, if not politically incorrect Kellogg's Corn Flakes ads. (Sorry, we sold that.) And the public seemed glued to the newspaper and magazine accounts of his over-a-year-long trip. By the time he returned, the wildly popular Spanish American War hero and wildly popular president had become an even more wildly popular ex-president. Here's a stereo view card showing him in New York City on June 18, 1910, after his boat had landed and he had received (another) hero's welcome upon his return to the States. He's up there in front of the public where he enjoyed being as much as he enjoyed being in the wilderness. A very complex person, huh? Perhaps that's why he's on Mt. Rushmore.
