Guess back at the time of the 1916 election, people knew who the president and vice-president were. So the maker of this 7/8" cello button didn't even bother to put the guy's names on it. But never underestimate the ignorance of some of the voters. If you aren't aware of it, democrats Woodrow Wilson and Thomas Marshall were running for re-election and, since a major part of the rest of the planet was already involved in World War I, they ran on an "America First" slogan. And then hinted at that they were strong and we were preparing to defend ourselves. But they, like many of that party, wanted it both ways. Because they also ran on a Wilson slogan of: "He Kept Us Out Of War." So, which was it? Actually, they almost lost this election to republican Charles Hughes who, if he had carried California, would have beat them. Even some newspapers were printed saying Hughes HAD won, and those are pretty valuable today. So, right after Wilson and Marshall were sworn in on March 4, 1917, Wilson went to Congress in April and asked for a Declaration of War against Germany, he instituted a draft and, in a year-and-a-half, by November 11, 1918, 110,000 American boys lost their lives in that "War to End All Wars." Some great President, huh? Imagine if CNN had been around to televise the slaughter. This is in nice condition but please enlarge our images to judge condition for yourself so you can be happy with your purchase. Shipping on it will be $5.50 sent well-protected, first class with tracking. We are members of APIC and sell only authentic presidential (and other collectible) material so buy with confidence.
