Antique President George Washington Silhouette Miniature Portrait We have been in the antique book business for 40+ years and found this hand-cut antique George Washington silhouette in a very old early to mid 19th century book. This sort of art is not “our niche” but it is clearly very old, using off-white paper the top surface of which is inked in black. It is a very artistically done, very realistic portrait of the first president of the United States, right down to the eyelashes. It is 3-⅝ inches tall, and has never been mounted to anything else (thus you can see the ancient paper). We couldn’t know it is “from life” or not and we doubt it has ever been framed or there would probably be glue on the back. The point of the lower left corner has been slightly bent with a bit of loss of the black ink as a result. Otherwise we would rate it as excellent condition. It is NOT some modern concoction, cooked up in the wake of what somebody might have seen on Antiques Roadshow recently. It would look superb mounted in an ancient frame under glass and we can’t imagine who would be able to say it did not come from the period of Washington’s life or shortly thereafter.
