WILLIAM MCKINLEY. Large box made of wood originally from the platform that William McKinley stood on during his first inauguration in Washington, DC on March 4, 1897. The 28th inauguration took place in front of the Old Senate Chamber at the United States Capitol. Contains a sliding lid, measures 6 by 3 by 2 inches, and in very good condition with wearing and chipping around the lid from use. LARGE BOX MADE OF WOOD ORIGINALLY FROM THE PLATFORM THAT WILLIAM MCKINLEY STOOD ON DURING HIS FIRST INAUGURATION IN WASHINGTON, DC ON MARCH 4, 1897 Accompanied with a late 19th century typed note of provenance attached to the bottom from George W. Barnes, the contractor who supplied the wood and built the Grand Stand for McKinley’s inauguration: “A piece of the plank President Wm. McKinley stood upon taken from the platform upon which he delivered his inaugural address March 4, 1897, Presented by Geo. W. Barnes.” ACCOMPANIED WITH LATE 19TH CENTURY PROVENANCE FROM THE CONTRACTOR WHO BUILT THE GRAND STAND FOR MCKINLEY’S INAUGURATION: “A PIECE OF THE PLANK PRESIDENT WM. MCKINLEY STOOD UPON TAKEN FROM THE PLATFORM UPON WHICH HE DELIVERED HIS INAUGURAL ADDRESS MARCH 4, 1897, PRESENTED BY GEO. W. BARNES.” In addition, there is a late 19th century handwritten note of provenance attached to the interior lid from the recipient of the box: “Geo. W. Barnes who had this box made was a personal friend who had contracted for the lumber in the Grand Stand, for building purposes, and this is one of five boxes made from the plank described.”
