ANDREW JACKSON. Very rare significant lock of Andrew Jackson’s hair, measuring approximately 3.25 inches long, tied together and attached with a period wax seal to a 6 by 3.375 inch personal notecard of Forest H. Sweet bearing his handwritten provenance that reads in full: “Hair of General Andrew Jackson, a portion of lot 96 of the Personal Relics of President Andrew Jackson consigned and guaranteed genuine by Andrew Jackson the Fourth.” VERY RARE SIGNIFICANT LOCK OF ANDREW JACKSON’S HAIR TIED TOGETHER AND ATTACHED TO HANDWRITTEN PROVENANCE FROM FOREST H. SWEET Forest H. Sweet was a well-known early 20th century historical documents and relics dealer who at the time owned the largest hair collection in the world. Andrew Jackon, IV (1887-1953) was the son of Andrew Jackson, III (1834-1906) who, in turn, was the son of Andrew Jackson, Jr. (1809-1865), the nephew of President Andrew Jackson (1767-1845) and his wife, Rachel 1767-1828). The Jacksons adopted Jackson, Jr. upon the death of his father and brother to Rachel, Severn Donelson (1773-1818). “HAIR OF GENERAL ANDREW JACKSON, A PORTION OF LOT 96 OF THE PERSONAL RELICS OF PRESIDENT ANDREW JACKSON CONSIGNED AND GUARANTEED GENUINE BY ANDREW JACKSON THE FOURTH” This highly desirable lock of hair is complemented by ironclad familial provenance directly from Jackson’s adoptive great-grandson. A similar example sold for $5,100 at Slotin Folk Art auction house in 2005.
