ULYSSES S. GRANT. Historically important document from the twenty-six presidential electors from the state of Pennsylvania pledging all of their votes to Ulysses S. Grant for president and Schuyler Colfax for vice president during the 1868 election. HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT DOCUMENT FROM THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTORS OF PENNSYLVANIA PLEDGING ALL OF THEIR VOTES TO ULYSSES S. GRANT FOR PRESIDENT DURING THE 1868 ELECTION Contains the handwritten certification on the recto, “We, the Electors, duly elected on the part of the State of Pennsylvania, to vote for a President and Vice President of the United States, do certify that a list of all the votes given for President and Vice President is contained herein,” and the receiver on the recto and verso, “The President of the Senate of the United States, Washington, D.C.” General Grant narrowly won the state of Pennsylvania with 342,280 votes to Horatio Seymour’s 313,382 votes. Grant would defeat Seymour by carrying 26 states for a total of 214 electoral votes in the 1868 presidential election. “WE, THE ELECTORS, DULY ELECTED ON THE PART OF THE STATE OF PENNSYLVANIA, TO VOTE FOR A PRESIDENT AND VICE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, DO CERTIFY THAT A LIST OF ALL THE VOTES GIVEN FOR PRESIDENT AND VICE PRESIDENT IS CONTAINED HEREIN” Signed by all twenty-six electors, contains two pages on an envelope with “Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Executive Department” stationery, measures 10 by 5.75 inches, created in [Philadelphia] in [November 1868], and in very fine condition with light soiling and a crease to the left border.
