The 1970 United States elections were held on November 3, and elected the members of the 92nd United States Congress. The election took place during the Vietnam War, in the middle of Republican President Richard Nixon's first term. The Democratic Party defended their control of Congress by retaining its Senate majority and increasing its majority in the House of Representatives. Nixon and Vice President Spiro Agnew campaigned heavily for Republican candidates, with Nixon encouraging voters to respond to anti-war and civil rights activists by voting the Republican ticket. William Ernst Minor III, a 5th generation Cincinnatian whose family built Scarlet Oaks in Clifton died on August 8, 2023. Ernie, Thanks to the generosity of his great aunt, Sarah Flesichmann, graduated from the Hotchkiss School and Brown University. He served on active duty in the U.S. Naval Amphibious Forces from 1955-1957. Ernie was involved in the printing and radio business before entering politics in 1968; where he worked in New York for the Richard Nixon campaign for President. Also, he was a member of the Nixon White House until 1972. Ernie was particularly proud of his part in having the EPA Research Center located in Cincinnati on Martin Luther King Drive and its dedication by President Gerald Ford in 1975. In 1980 during the Reagan for President campaign, he was named Director of Family Scheduling. Ernie was part of the transition team and was appointed by President Reagan to be a member of his Council on Environmental Quality; and was confirmed by the U.S. Senate in 1981. He returned to Cincinnati in 1986 to assist with the city's bicentennial Tall Stacks celebration of 1988. In an October speech, Nixon declared, "My friends, I say that the answer to those that engage in disruption--to those that shout their filthy slogans, to those that try to shout down speakers--is not to answer in kind, but go to the polls on election day, and in the quiet of that ballot box, stand up and be counted: the great silent majority of America." This was the first time that Republicans gained Senate seats while losing House seats in a midterm, which also later occurred in 2018. Democrats did this in 1914, 1962, and 2022 as well. This election saw future president Jimmy Carter win the election to the governorship in Georgia.
